1. Species Diversity
Since 2002, field surveys in Yunnan have identified 13 wild morel species, primarily distributed in Dêqên Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Lijiang City, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, and Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture (northwestern Yunnan). Key species include:
- Morchella importuna (commercial cultivar ancestor)
- Morchella sextelata (high-altitude specialty)
- Morchella conica (early-spring variety)

II. Ecological Requirements for Wild Morel Growth
2. Climate Preferences
- Ideal Conditions:
▶ Temperature: 8–18°C (ascocarp formation)
▶ Diurnal temperature range: 10–15°C (critical for fruiting)
▶ Annual precipitation: 800–1,200mm - Seasonal Patterns:SeasonTimeframeFruitbody CharacteristicsSpringLate Mar–Late MayThick hymenium (high commercial value)AutumnAug–NovThin hymenium (lower yield)
3. Habitat & Vegetation Analysis
Sample Plot 1: Alpine Mixed Forest (Dêqên)
- Location: 60km SE of Weixi County, 3,000–3,100m altitude
- Slope/aspect: 60° northeast slope
- Soil: Dark brown soil (basalt parent material)
- Vegetation:
▶ Tree layer: Picea likiangensis (Lijiang spruce), Abies georgei (George’s fir) – 40% coverage
▶ Herb layer: Ferns, Gramineae – 10% coverage
Sample Plot 2: Valley Mixed Forest (Lijiang)
- Location: Lameirong, Ludian Township (2,900m altitude)
- Unique Feature: High shrub coverage (40%) with Clethra delavayi (Delavay clethra)
- Soil: Yellow-brown soil (granite parent material)
Sample Plot 3: Post-Harvest Grassland (Weixi)
- Unique Ecology:
▶ 100% herb layer dominance by Pteridium aquilinum (bracken fern)
▶ Sandy soil (excellent aeration)
▶ No tree/shrub layers
Sample Plot 4: Tropical River Valley (Qiaojia)
- Exceptional Case:
▶ Low altitude (753m)
▶ Cultivated among Saccharum officinarum (sugarcane) and Ipomoea batatas (sweet potato)
▶ Clayey soil (unusual for morels)
III. Commercial Cultivation Expansion
4. Industry Growth Trends
China’s Morel Cultivation Area (2016–2020):
Year | Area (mu) | Growth Rate | Key Drivers |
---|---|---|---|
2016–2017 | 23,400 | -15% | Price volatility |
2017–2018 | 70,000 | +199% | Sichuan-Chongqing success |
2018–2019 | 120,000–140,000 | +71%–100% | Improved cultivars |
