Unveiling the “Xiuyan Off-season Mushroom Model”

Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County in Liaoning Province has leveraged its unique natural conditions and innovative cultivation methods to build an off-season mushroom industry that ranks among the top in scale and quality nationwide. This industry fills the gap in the summer fresh mushroom market, accounting for 50% of Liaoning’s off-season mushroom share and earning the county the reputation of a “golden production area” in China’s mushroom industry.

1. Natural Endowments Create Rare Quality

Climate Advantages

Located in the golden production area at 40° north latitude, Xiuyan has a short duration of high temperatures in summer. The large temperature difference between day and night and moderate humidity facilitate mushroom growth. With few rainy and cloudy days and low air humidity, the mushrooms here have excellent quality and a strong aroma.

Unique Raw Materials

The mushrooms in Xiuyan are cultivated with high – quality oak sawdust (with an annual supply of 860,000 tons) as the medium and deep – well groundwater (national second – class water quality). This combination results in “Xiuyan mushrooms” with high density and great taste, which have been included in the national catalog of famous, special, excellent, and new agricultural products.

Off – peak Market Entry

The fresh mushroom 上市期 (from April to October) perfectly avoids the peak production period of the southern main production areas (from October to March of the following year). This allows Xiuyan mushrooms to monopolize the summer fresh mushroom market, with stable prices and high demand.

2. The Whole Industry Chain Supports Large – scale Development

Leading Production Capacity Nationwide

Mushrooms are the most widely planted edible fungi in Xiuyan, mainly focusing on off – season summer mushroom production. Off – season summer mushrooms account for over 95% of the total mushroom cultivation in the county and 50% of Liaoning’s off – season mushroom cultivation. In 2024, the output of off – season mushrooms reached 278,000 tons, accounting for 82% of the county’s total edible fungi output.

Standardized Production

There are more than 200 standardized demonstration areas with an annual production capacity of over 500 tons, more than 100 mushroom production bases with over one million bags, and 30,000 cold greenhouses under scientific management. The entire process from spawn production, inoculation to mushroom growth is controllable, ensuring consistent quality.

Cold Chain Logistics Support

There are 400 refrigerated warehouses for edible fungi with a capacity of over 50 tons each. These warehouses can quickly pre – cool standard fresh mushrooms and distribute them across the country, accounting for 85% of the county’s total mushroom output. More than 200 edible fungi brokers ensure that slippery mushrooms are promptly delivered to deep – processing enterprises. The processed products, such as frozen, pickled, and canned mushrooms, are exported to Southeast Asia, Europe, and other countries and regions.

3. Market Recognition and Brand Premium

Dual – Engine of Domestic and Overseas Sales

Domestic Market: The products are sold across the country in fresh and dried forms. Standard mushrooms are mainly sold fresh, accounting for 80 – 85% of the total mushroom output, while other mushrooms are mostly sold in dried form.
Overseas Market: Deep – processed products (frozen, pickled, and canned products) are exported to countries and regions such as Japan, South Korea, North America, and the European Union. The annual export value exceeds 10 million US dollars. “Xiuyan Slippery Mushrooms” has obtained national geographical indication certification.

Formation of Brand Matrix

Ten trademarks such as “Angmei” and “Xiuyuxiang” cover high – and mid – end markets. The certified area of green and organic products in the leading industry is 542 mu, continuously enhancing the brand premium ability.

4. Policy Support and Farmers’ Income Increase

Technical Support

More than 500 local technicians and a team of over 100 experts provide full – process guidance. Spawn bags are included in policy – based insurance to reduce cultivation risks.

Connecting Farmers and Driving Income Growth

Mushroom production has covered more than 190 administrative villages in 24 towns (streets) of the county. There are over 20,000 mushroom – growing farmers, and the number of people engaged in edible fungi production and related industries reaches 100,000, with an average income of over 9,000 yuan per person.

From the oak forest at 40° north latitude to occupying a significant share of the national summer mushroom market, Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County has painted a rural revitalization picture with “one mushroom.” The Xiuyan experience shows that by basing on resource endowments, deeply cultivating characteristic industries, and promoting the integration of the three industries, edible fungi can not only be the “ecological code” for enriching the people and strengthening the county but also the “golden engine” for rural revitalization.
